Make It Monthly in May
In 2013, Kawolo Hospital in Lugaze, Uganda was facing a crisis. While the hospital was a vital resource for thousands of people in the Buikwe, Mukono, Kayunga, and Buvuma districts of Uganda, staff often struggled to provide safe medical care for their patients. The hospital’s water system was outdated and falling apart. The water it provided was unsafe, and frequently there was not enough to go around. Many patients had to bring their own water to the hospital, while hospital staff struggled to maintain proper sanitation.
The hospital’s water insecurity left thousands of patients vulnerable to infection every day. In particular, poor conditions in the maternity ward left new mothers and their children at risk. In a country where sixteen women die from childbirth every day, the lack of safe water at Kawolo Hospital posed a massive risk to mothers in the area.
In 2014, H2O4ALL partnered with Save the Mothers to build a safe water system at Kawolo Hospital. We started by bringing safe water access to the hospital’s maternity ward, ensuring that every mother who visited Kawolo would be able to do so in a clean facilitywith safe water. Two additional projects in 2014 and 2017 extended the safe water system to all wards of the hospital.Â
Each year since the first project in 2013, more than 23,000 women have been able to rely on Kawolo Hospital when they give birth, knowing that they and their babies will have a safe, clean and comfortable place to stay. The sepsis rate at the hospital dropped to 0% after the project’s implementation, and staff have managed to maintain that standard for more than a decade. Not only that, but H2O4ALL’s projects brought international attention to the hospital, leading to the hospital going through a massive renovation funded by the country of Denmark. Â
Starting with a single project in 2012, our mission in Kawolo has grown to save tens of thousands of lives over the past decade. By maintaining a strong partnership with the hospital’s leadership, we’ve ensured that the safe water system remains functional and sustainable. None of this would be possible without the continued support of our monthly donors in Canada.Â
With even a small monthly donation, you too can be a part of a movement to bring safe water to struggling families and improve the quality of life for thousands of people worldwide. This May, we’re inviting you to join H2O4ALL’s community of monthly donors. Every donation, big or small, helps us make a difference in water-stressed areas.
