TASTE OF INDIA 2024: Help Us Bring Safe Water to Cuba!
On Sunday, June 9th, you are invited to our annual Taste of India fundraiser. Join us for an evening of classic Indian food and the chance to support our ongoing partnership with Assemblies of God in Cuba.Â
Our mission in Cuba nine years ago began in the city of Cienfuegos, the capital of the Cienfuegos District on the south coast of Cuba. When our mission began, the public water system in Cienfuegos City was over a century old and falling into disrepair. Families were getting by without enough water for their daily needs, and the water they did have was frequently contaminated and unsafe to drink.Â
Outside Cienfuegos City, many small towns were relying on unprotected natural water sources, increasing their risk of waterborne disease. They may also find water from water vendors. Not only is this water also frequently unsafe, but the price of water puts a financial strain on families who have to resort to this option.
We needed a way to ensure we could reach the whole community, so we began working with Assemblies of God churches. We’ve installed safe water systems in eighteen churches throughout Cienfuegos and the neighboring district of Villa Clara, empowering our partner churches to provide their communities with a water source they can trust. Â
Over the years, these projects have provided steady water access to their communities, even through times of crisis. During Hurricane Irma in 2017 and Hurricane Elsa in 2021, thousands of people who had lost safe water access found water and shelter at our partner churches. When churches stayed open during the COVID-19 pandemic to provide water to needy families, we worked with our partners to install handwashing stations at churches to stop the spread of COVID-19.
