Breaking New Ground in Kenya
In April 2023, our project teams from Canada and the USA were on the ground in Kenya to visit several of our partner communities. In Meru County, we checked on our partners at Mulika, who have used an H2O4ALL water system since 2017. We also visited our newer project sites at Ntalami Primary School, which received a safe water system in 2022, and Mailiari Health Centre, which will receive a safe water system later this year.
Finally, we broke new ground in Kibera, outside Nairobi. This informal community is home to nearly two million people, many of whom live in poverty. Since Kibera isn’t linked to any local water systems, most people rely on the extremely polluted Nairobi River.
We partnered with Brandon Okoth, a leader in the local World Water Quality Alliance and a Kibera native, to begin distributing water filters around the community’s Saran’gombe Ward. During the April trip, two children’s libraries, two local food markets, and a youth center all received bucket water filters empowering them to provide safe and clean water to community members. Later in the year, we distributed twenty more filters at community gathering points across Saran’gombe Ward.
We’re excited to keep working with the Kibera community this year. Our goal in 2024 is to reach all five of Kibera’s wards, ensuring reliable safe water access for as many people as possible.
